The opening range breakout (ORB) is one of the most popular intraday strategies, especially on index futures like MNQ and NQ.
The basic idea
- Mark the high and low of the first part of the session (for example the first 15 minutes).
- Wait for price to break out of that range.
- Enter in the breakout direction, often after a confirmation or retest.
- Place a stop on the other side or at a structural level, and a target based on risk.
Common pitfalls
- False breakouts and wicks that trap traders
- Trading ranges that are too tight or too wide
- Overtrading late in the session
Tools that apply the rules for you
- ORB Suite: confirmed breakouts on MNQ 15m with pre-set TP and SL, 4 presets and an end-of-day cutoff.
- ORB Ultimate Pro: VWAP, ATR, RSI and PDH/PDL filters to skip weak breakouts.
Trade ORB with clear rules.
